WESTON
green village initiative
GVI extended its reach into the Town of Weston in February 2011. The team is led by Lauren Fay and Amy Kalafa. Sleepier than its good neighbor Westport, Weston offers a little bit of Vermont in Fairfield County with its many rustic barns, epic hills and Devil’s Den nature preserve. Typical of small towns, Weston is a tightly knit community with a strong sense of local pride.
Recent projects include co-sponsorship of a lecture and book signing with national best selling author Anna Lappé who discussed her latest book, Diet for a Hot Planet: The Climate Crisis at the End of Your Fork and What You Can Do About It, and a farmers’ panel discussion featuring local food movement pioneers Dina Brewster (The Hickories Farm), Annie Farrell (Millstone Farm) and John Holbrook (Holbrook Farm).
The team also recently submitted a proposal to the Town to restore the historic Lachat property on Godfrey Road West into a working Town Farm and Sustainability Center. Our proposal is currently under consideration by the Town’s seven-member Lachat Committee.
The Weston Town Farm would insure Weston’s place as a leader in sustainable environmental and community practice. The goal of the Town Farm will be to establish a model facility that will educate the community and inspire others with local healthy food production, responsible land stewardship, sustainable practices, community/service orientation, and the highest ethical practices.
